This Monday, I got a call on my mobile phone and when I tried to pick it up, I noticed the buttons didn't respond anymore. So I turned it off and tried to get it to work again, but nothing helped.

I was already planning on getting a new phone, but I wasn't expecting to do it this soon.

So I went into town to find one I liked. Of course all the nice (and relatively cheap) prepaid phones were from Vodafone. So that wasn't helping me out, since I needed a phone to work with my old T-Mobile SIM card (it's dating all the way back to when it was still Ben).

After a couple of hours of searching I decided it was better to look online and order a SIM-lock free phone there. And this is what I have bought (and it arrived this Wednesday):

Sony Ericsson Z310i

A nice Sony Ericsson Z310i.

It works relatively intuitive and I actually got the whole WAP-stuff to work with my prepaid card. So once again I can be reached. And best of all: I can enjoy all the new nice stuff of the modern telephones. (And the sound quality is much better than any other mobile phone I've ever had.)

Just saw Nienke (of Autumn), [info]blerwitch and [info]ploma on TV (National IQ Test). The last two headbanging to a fragment from an Autumn song. So funny. :P

Edit:
Just finished the test online and scored 119. :P Even though I was chatting online at the same time. Hihi.
Anyway, it's higher than I expected. :P

And I must say, that woman explaining all that stuff is ANNOYING. Somehow she doesn't open her mouth when she talks. Just her lips... It sounds very, very annoying.

Edit:
Okay, it's even stranger... If I look at the table which corresponds good answers and age to IQ, I could not have scored 119, since 119 was only present in a different age category...
Hehe... Scored higher than the gothics and just as good as the people smoking pot. :P

Listening to the great live album "Be" of Pain of Salvation. I've been fascinated by this DVD since the day I got it from Peter. Normally I would listen to a couple of songs and watch the rest some other time, but with this DVD, it was quite different. I couldn't stop watching and listening... The next day I watched it again and listened to the commentary track. Very fascinating to hear them talk
about the concepts behind the show. And I've listened to it a couple of times more. No sign of getting bored by the music yet. So many different styles and such great unpredictability at times.
I haven't really grasped the music enough yet to start paying some real attention to the lyrics, but I'm sure they will confront me at some point in the not too distant future.

This weekend I've been at my parent's place. They just had a new kitchen installed and my father finished putting in the new floor, so we could move some stuff back into the kitchen and the living room. The nice side-effect was that my mother found some stuff she doesn't need anymore, so I now have some "new" cookingpots and some steak knives. :)

And I got a chance to take some nice pictures of a few insects, spiders and flowers. :)

See the photographs... )

I've been playing a bit with Peter's camera. In about 2 hours I shot 420 MB worth of photographs. :P

These three pictures I just couldn't keep from you... )

I'm now sitting in Stairway since I was a bit early. Couldn't risk to be late though.

Problem is, I can't call Ben since I keep losing his phonenumber. Somehow I never store it on my computer and my phone somehow keeps removing his entry. And of course our mutual friends don't respond to phonecalls at the moment... Quite annoying.

So since I can't contact him I decided to grab a beer and wait for the bus I was supposed to take (and hope he calls me or comes to the bus-stop).

As seen at [info]taelia_quest

1. Copy and paste your friends list.
2. If you've friended multiple journals by the same person, delete all but the "main" one. If any are icon journals or not personal ones, delete those too.
3. Bold the name of everyone you know or have met in "real life".
4. Italicize the name of everyone you've spoken to on the phone or online (webcam + microphone).
5. Underline the name of everyone you've chatted with online.
6. [Bracket] people you've known, online or off, for more than five years.
7. Turn family members red
8. Pass it on

Finally the internet drama at Circus Jopie is solved. Yesterday someone fixed ADSL, which I couldn't get to work. But today
I had to fix the fileserver/mailserver for the changes in the network environment.

Technical stuff... )

After about 2 to 3 weeks of having a hard time focusing, I am finally making progress again.

I do fall into the trap of difficult implementations though. Instead of doing the simplest possible thing, I try to add refactoring and generalisation in my head too before I actually type it out. And no big surprise: it just doesn't work!

So I started over again and made it really simple, but ugly. But hey, making it work is important first. Making it beautiful is something for tomorrow.

Maybe I have exactly the same problem in life. I just don't get things done because I think about it too much. And usually it's really a lot of work to come up with a good implementation to tackle problems. And those solutions often take a lot more work too. No wonder I don't get things done. It doesn't mean that I shouldn't think about things. I just shouldn't overthink things. Just get it done!

Because I went to buy a filter for my 50mm lens, I had the train half an hour early. So I went to Stairway to Heaven to get a drink. There I ran into Hans and a colleague of his. Hans used to work at N200 with Johan and Anthony. So I was pleasantly surprised to see him. It seems I'm getting rather out of touch with everyone, since he still talks to at least Ron and Anthony. Ron is planning to get married and Anthony married David, how cool is that!?!

Anyway, it was nice to talk to him again, even if it was only for about half an hour. (Had to go and tutor Robin, a friend of Eline.)

Some events this weekend have led me to think about relationships (both platonic and romantic ones) some more than I had been lately. It seems like the things I see going wrong with other people show me why my ethical system exists and has the state it's in currently.

So, the question that has been floating through my head since Friday... What do I really want out of a relationship? Somehow the answer to this question will show (I think) why I don't have a relationship at the moment.

Answer to the question... )

[music |Nightwish - The Kinslayer]

I just finished converting the online portfolio of a friend of mine (Alex). It was built in HTML 4.01 with frames and tables and had some minor flaws. Now the whole thing uses valid XHTML 1.1 and CSS; the frames and tables have gone completely.

First I used wget to grab the whole site, then made sure I could use BML on my test-server. I always use BML if I want to use a template for site construction. It's so damn fast to use (once you have it in place). :) Then reconstructed the layout in the template and the stylesheet; changed things around when the need arose. This was the challenging part.
Then came the simple, but tedious work of converting all pages to use my new template and remove all the rubbish. When finally everything was working fine, I checked the validity of all the pages using the validation-service of the W3C. Then I used wget again to grab the actual XHTML-output instead of the files that used templates. Then used sed to replace all instances of bml in the source with html, so that links would be working in a non-BML-template environment. Packaged the whole thing and sent it on it's merry way. :)

All in all it was quite useful to learn how to do this with a small site. :)
